For performance reasons, bd does not release memory back to the operating system. Typical bd process is as follows:

You start the system.
The bd process immediately loads the configuration and allocates initial buffers.
This process uses a small amount of resident memory.

If no memory is available, the bd process sends a request to the system to allocate new memory for a fresh buffer.
*The bd process retains this memory to use for a future request.*
On the first day in production, bd memory increases and peaks as traffic throughput increases.
